After 14 years working as a personal trainer, and living it, I have concluded that there are a number of flaws, unfortunately common; they will always hurt the career of a personal trainer. Many will think that it is my way of thinking but I must admit that I observe in myself enough of the defects that I describe below so that part of this post is also an exercise in self-criticism. – DO NOT LISTEN TO THE MARKET
No matter what you think is right when living in a profession, the market sends and it is he who decides which professionals he admits and who he expels. Learn from those who seem to be better received by the market, analyze them and, possibly, once you have got the market to accept you, and you gain the confidence of some customers, you can start to change the way of thinking of a few.
Some people believe that the market should be regulated by law. In all professions there is a movement that claims the same thing. Let’s spend a few years, until the graduates in cooking schools substantially exceed the existing demand and start to accumulate in unemployment. – ARROGANCE IN KNOWLEDGE
I do not know any good coaches who pass the years and continue training in the same way. Each year that passes each and every one of them recognizes to me how far they had been a year ago they were wrong in aspects that they considered solid and unshakable and, besides, they have no qualms in recognizing it. Most of the aspects we know of and are commonly used in professional training, both amateur and high performance athletes, are not unanimously endorsed by science and are based primarily on the opinion and experience of great coaches. Although it is true that many studies support much of the current knowledge, it is also true that many others do not achieve the same results. In the end, the reality you see is that a well-equipped laboratory that is, and trained its researchers, can hardly accurately simulate the environment in which athletes and athletes in general are in the day to day. Too many aspects interact that cannot be controlled or reproduced in a laboratory and, therefore, we cannot base our evolution as professionals only in the academic work because we run the risk of not knowing what to do or, in the worst case, Going crazy because of the lack of consensus on practically everything that affects exercise and health. Others simply want to do something to break the charge of conscience or they are just so stubborn that they are guided by lifelong myths and any training that challenges them is considered a waste of time. There are also many cases of people being blocked by excessive pressure or fear of disappointment. The coach must know how to deal with all the previous scenarios and he who does not have this virtue and also does not use it permanently, will have difficulties not only to maintain the clients but also to get the results for which he was hired.
– FORM TO TRAIN CUSTOMERS, NOT YOURSELF
Perhaps the most widespread defect of all. Most coaches follow the same profile. They started youngsters to exercise; it became their passion and motivation to learn how to improve their results. At some point they decide what better than to turn their hobby and passion into their profession but forget that their clients are not an extension of themselves. In their place they continue to be formed in those matters that are more interesting to them and not in those that best suit their clients. Proof of this is the number of coaches who have some training in nutrition, and the lack of training in special populations. Remember that the work of every professional, not only that of coaches, is measured by the results obtained with their clients, not themselves.
Let’s analyze the situation: Nutrition, more specifically, dietetics, is something so complex that the correct, the professional, will always be referred to a specialist and that is not the coach who risks to ignore something that his poor training does not Has taken into account. On the other hand, who needs and can afford to pay a coach? Most are people from a certain age; many of them with specific conditions that make the guidelines that usually serve in healthy population are not recommended for them being even potentially harmful. Many of the clients we serve are performers are preadolescents, seniors, or those with obesity, hypertension, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, recovery from various cancers, fibromyalgia, sarcopenia, cardiomyopathies, and various column pathologies. Conditions that require specific treatment. My theory about why most coaches do not have specific training is that few coaches suffer them and, if so, would be a total lack of professionalism.
